Reporting Problems

In An Emergency

If the Fire Brigade, Police or Ambulance Service are required, dial 9999 and give clear details to the public emergency service.

Then dial 43333 (University emergency number) to advise University staff, who will liaise with the public emergency services and initiate agreed procedures.

The list of staff to be contacted in an emergency is held by the University Security Office (42222).

When calling for assistance:

  • keep calm!
  • Be prepared to give a BRIEF, CLEAR and PRECISE explanation of the problem.
  • Be ready to give your exact location (e.g. room, floor, block, Department or College, street or road name and number).

General Problem Reporting

You should report your concerns to one of the following, listed in order of preference:

  1. your line manager or supervisor;
  2. a member of the Safety Committee (Appendix A), either in person, or by email to [email protected];
  3. the Chair of the Board of Studies ([email protected]);
  4. the University Health and Safety Service ([email protected]).

If for any reason you cannot disclose your concern to one of these, e.g. because it implicates them, or if you are not satisfied with the response to your concerns once raised, you should use the next contact in the order of preference.

An online form for anonymous reporting of safety concerns to the UHSS is available on the Chemistry Safety website. Information entered into this form is sent by anonymous email.

More general reports of near misses can be made using a Near Miss page on the Chemistry Safety website.

Committee Membership and Staff Roles

For some specific problems, you may find that approaching the staff member with the corresponding responsibility is more productive.

Details of staff with specific safety duties are in Section A of the Departmental policy.

Details of the Chemistry Safety Committee membership are here (PDF).
